bachelor of art photography by senac university and master in
contemporary artistic creation by the universidad de barcelona, rafael
cañas cañas begins his early artistic trajectory when during
photography college he gave up his wish to become a war
photojournalist - a remnant of a young anarchist age - to nosedive
into the universe of artistic expression photography . thanks to an
ex-girlfriend who was passionate about art and to sensible teachers
who worked at the institution he was able to find his vocation early .
he always participated in the annual exhibitions held by the college
and was also cultural director of the academic center where along with
his colleagues he produced an exhibition at funarte / sp with the
theme ordinary photography . after graduating as a bachelor in art
photography he passed briefly through the fashion world where he
specialized in backstage photography officially covering the spfw and
fashion rio . he also spent a season in mercedes-benz fashion week in
new york . after this brief period he became a photographic partner of
the vermelho gallery where he contributed for some years shooting the
exhibitions, works of art and performances - highlighting the verbo
show that produced a retrospective book with images by the author and
other photographers hosted by the gallery . at the end of this period
he's thirty years old and decides to end his professional trajectory
in photography even though never stopped producing his authorial work
using this contemporary language . he sells all his equipment and
leaves for the city of barcelona where he pursues a master's degree in
contemporary artistic creation at universidad de barcelona with focus
on sculptural making . since photographic collages were a constant in
his artistic career he could identify a sculptural relationship in his
creative process which allowed him to enter the master with security
and to reach great success in defending his thesis, a video as a
sculpture called revealed materiality . in this five-minute video it
is presented scenes of various materials being developed - such as
cement, wood, terra-cotta and steel - with cyanotype a photographic
process of the nineteenth century . he scores a final grade of 96/100
and returns to his country of origin to start his first studio and
develop a body of work within the sculptural realm using light as
matter and using it as the main concept of his poetics . he also
recently founded an authoral audiovisual production company named
inpkbl with a focus on creation within the contemporary
sculptural concept . the universe in which he has always been immersed
is the universe of eroticism
